Pirtek support Amgen Cymru with planned maintenance for smoother hydraulics

In a lifetime, the average person will throw away 600 times their adult weight in rubbish. As one of the most pressing issues facing future generations, waste management and disposal solutions are vital to reducing our impact on the environment. At Pirtek, by ensuring we deliver preventive maintenance and 24/7 call-out support, we’ve supported the waste management sector helping a variety of customers overcome the challenges they face in their operations.

Amgen Cymru have been providing a range of waste management services to the residents and businesses of Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales since 1993.

Operating the Bryn Pica waste management facility in Aberdare, which has the capacity to process up to 30,000 tonnes per annum, alongside operating six other community recycling centres across the borough, Amgen Cymru are committed to keeping the area’s environmental impact to an absolute minimum.

Industry

Waste management and disposal.

Service

Emergency hose replacements and planned maintenance.

Customer benefit

Significant annual cost saving on callouts and unplanned downtime, benefiting from a 15% increase in production time over a 12 month period

The problem

In 2019, Amgen Cymru turned to Pirtek UK & Ireland to carry out routine inspections and planned maintenance on their machinery and hydraulics and to ensure the processing plant is always operating smoothly.

Following the initial setup and onboarding with the hose replacement service, Pirtek looked to reduce the number of emergency reactive callouts by delivering a regular service of planned maintenance and inspections.

The solution

Pirtek currently provides their servicing duties to Amgen on a monthly basis as well as bi-weekly site inspections to ensure there are no issues that need to be addressed. Following the initial setup, Pirtek was called out to resolve an issue with coolers failing at the facility. Material Recycling Facilities (MRF) generate a high level of heat as they process tonnes of waste for recycling. Aside from the major health and safety risks associated with damaged hydraulic hoses in the cooling systems, when a cooling system fails, it shuts the entire facility down, potentially costing an organisation thousands of pounds through downtime.

The results

Having renewed for another year, the hydraulic hose replacement service provided by Pirtek will ensure they are always on hand to support Amgen’s ‘war on waste’.

Jason Woods, Director at Pirtek Worcester said, “When a machine at a MRF goes down, it grinds the entire production plant to a halt. Following our partnership with Amgen Cymru, we set out to ensure that we deliver an exceptional level of service and rapid response times through planned maintenance with the objective to reduce the number of call-outs. We work closely with Amgen Cymru to keep the business operational, and we look forward to supporting them now and in the future.”
